Charlene Brown, a dancer and studio owner from Bremerton, moved to Whidbey Island in 1985 and began Island Dance one year later at Island County Fairgrounds. Sharla Matthews became Char's business partner in 1997. The studio moved many times, but finally, in 2013, we moved to our new home at the old Langley High School, the two story brick building located at 714 Camano Avenue, between WICA, Whidbey Children's Theatre and Langley Middle School. What a perfect location!
Whidbey Island's beloved Nutcracker tradition began as Char's vision in 1991. After two productions, Char founded Whidbey Dance Theatre, a non-profit organization. Whidbey Island Dance Theatre is the current producer of The Nutcracker.
