Ballet

Ballet I is a children’s class  which introduces classical techniques designed to stimulate concentration, discipline and a love for ballet.  It is recommended for boys and girls, ages 6 to 10.  Students may stay 1-2 years in this level.

Female:   Light blue tank leotard, theatrical pink convertible tights, and pink solid-sole ballet slippers.  (Available at Island Dance). Hair must be in a ballet bun. No jewelry.

Male:  Fitted white tee shirt (tucked in).  Cotton ankle length leggings in black,  white socks, and white ballet shoes.  (Island Dance can order.)

 

Ballet II emphasizes proper placement, alignment and muscular support.  Ballet IIA students take one class a week, while Ballet IIB students are required to take two ballet classes per week.  Students may enroll in Ballet IIA or Ballet IIB with instructor permission.

Female:   Ballet IIA:  Light blue tank leotard; Ballet IIB:  Royal blue camisole leotard with adjustable straps; Both:  Theatrical pink convertible tights, and pink solid-sole ballet slippers.  (Available at Island Dance). Hair must be in a ballet bun. No jewelry.

Male:  Fitted white tee shirt (tucked in).  Cotton ankle length leggings in black,  white socks, and white ballet shoes. (Island Dance can order.)

 

Ballet III is designed for students with at least two years of recent ballet training.  This class emphasizes more complex barre and center work, musicality and proper placement.  Ballet III students are required to take 3 ballet classes each week, one of which will include pre-pointe conditioning. Students may enroll with instructor permission.

Female:  Navy blue spaghetti strap leotard, theatrical pink convertible tights, pink split-sole ballet slippers.  (Available at Island Dance.)  Hair must be in a ballet bun.  No jewelry.

Male:  Fitted white tee shirt (tucked in).  Cotton ankle length leggings in black,  white socks, and white ballet shoes.  (Island Dance can order.)

 

Ballet IV students are required take 4 ballet classes each week.  Dancers en pointe will be en pointe in at least two of these classes.    Beginning pointe will be in slipper or en pointe depending on teacher recommendation.  Ballet IV students typically have at least three years of Ballet experience.  Students enroll in Ballet IV with instructor permission.

Female:  Any style black leotard, theatrical pink convertible tights, pink split-sole ballet slippers.  (Available at Island Dance.)  Hair must be in a ballet bun.  No jewelry. 

Male:  Fitted white tee shirt (tucked in).  Cotton ankle length leggings in black,  white socks, and white ballet shoes.  (Island Dance can order.)

 

Ballet V-VIII  Intermediate / Advanced students must take at least four ballet classes per week. These classes may be en pointe or slipper. Students enroll with permission of the instructor.  Students dancing at this level are highly encouraged to take both Advanced Modern classes and additional pointe.

Ballet III - VII Attire

Level III-VII dancers are welcome to wear any color or style leotard during the last week of every month.


 

Open Ballet for Beginning & Intermediate Dancers. Ages 12-Adult. Open ballet is designed for older students who would like to experience ballet as an art form and activity, but do not plan to make it their dance focus.

Female / Male:  Comfortable workout attire or leotards with tights,  any style or color.  Ballet slippers.

 

 

Ballet  /  Pointe

Course Recommendations

It is recommended that Ballet students take an appropriate number of classes at Island Dance in order to develop technique, strength and stamina.  This will allow the student to dance safely, with less chance of injury.  This does not apply to adult ballet dancers.

Other Info: 

  • Pre-Pointe work specifically targets foot preparation and conditioning for the dancer who is nearly ready to embark on  Beginning Pointe training. Pre-Pointe is done on slipper only.
  • Prior to going en pointe, the dancer must have permission of the instructor and approval by Charlene Brown.  It is highly recommended that dancers consult with a foot and ankle specialist, such as Dr. Woodle in Seattle,  (206) 784-3144.
  • Dancers planning to go en pointe, should take the above number of required ballet classes.
  • Modern is suggested for all levels, ages 9-adult.  
  • Ballet students must arrive on time and be dressed appropriately or will be excused from class.
